VIENTIANE, LAOS (BosNewsLife)-- Authorities in southern Laos have fined seven regional church leaders for "violating local customs and beliefs" after torturing them for some two weeks, Christian rights activists told BosNewsLife Friday, December 30.

The Human Rights Watch for Lao Religious Freedom (HRWLRF) said the church officials were detained December 16 in Boukham Village, located in Savannakhet Province's Ad-Sapangthong District.

Days after church leaders arrested, officials target 47 Christians in neighboring village.

Nearly 50 Christians await their fate today after officials in Natoo village, southern Laos, on Wednesday (Dec. 21) summoned four of their leaders and warned that they would evict the entire church “within 24 hours” if they refused to give up their faith.

Officials told the Christians they had forfeited their right to live in the village because of their faith, the advocacy group Human Rights Watch for Lao Religious Freedom (HRWLRF) reported.

BANGKOK — Opium cultivation has surged in Myanmar and Laos as high prices attract impoverished farmers to grow the illicit crop, particularly in conflict areas, according to a UN report published Thursday.

The study by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), using helicopter, satellite and village surveys, saw a 16 percent increase in the amount of Southeast Asian land sown with poppies in 2011 since just last year.
